PETROLHEADS are starting their engines for a day full of two-wheeled fun as the Harwich Motorcycle Run and Family Festival returns to town on Sunday.

Thousands of bikers will again descend on Harwich, with 5,000 expected to arrive at noon following a 60-mile ride from Laindon.

The 16th annual run is organised by Essex Air Ambulance and is the charity’s biggest event of the year.

Attractions for bikers include display and dealer stands from Jim Aim Motorcycles and TK Cope Motorcycles, and a charity auction of framed photos signed by Moto GP riders such as Gino Rea and Alex Marquez.

For the first time, Ferry Motors, of Harwich, one of the oldest motorcycle shops in the UK, is supporting the event.

It will be donating a Motorcycle Goody Hamper to the winner of a golden ticket, hidden in a Motorcycle Run T-shirt.

Those wishing for a break from the motorised action can also enjoy a host of stalls, live music, craft and community stands and an inflatable fun zone.

Harwich Motorcycle Club president Peter Goodwin has been lending a hand at the event since the first ride came to the town in 2003.

He said: “It’s really exciting to see so many bikes in one place – the riders all seem to enjoy coming to Harwich.

“It’s a great destination for a cuppa and a burger, and I think the history of Harwich appeals, too – there’s so much to see and discover here.

“About three years ago, we thought we’d reached the limit and there was no more room in Harwich – but they still keep coming.

“At the end of the day it’s all for a good cause, so we’re always really pleased to see howmuch the event has raised.”

Visitors will be supporting the Essex Air Ambulance, a charity that relies on public donations to keep flying.

The show and its attractions for bikers and family will run from noon to 4.30pm at Harwich Green.
