AIREY houses built in Bradfield in 1947 have been knocked down to make way for new semi-detached council homes.

The new homes will be built in Windmill Road and handed back to the council tenants, who are currently in alternative accomodation, by March.

The build is part of Tendring Council's bid to improve its stock of council houses across the district.

Airey houses were designed by Sir Edwin Airey and built in Great Britain after the Second World War.

They are pre-fabricated concrete structures reinforced with steel, which often came from the frames of old military vehicles.
