AARON Condon believes he and his team-mates can write their own chapter of FC Clacton history.

The Seasiders have had a disappointing week, after bowing out of the Thurlow Nunn League Challenge Cup on Tuesday night.

They lost 4-1 on penalties, after the second-round tie finished 1-1.

Condon scored his side’s equalising goal and was also on target in the shoot-out.

And the club skipper says the players must put their disappointment behind them and set their sights on a best-ever league finish.

Their highest so far, since becoming FC Clacton in 2007, is 15th, in 2011/12 and 2013/14.

They currently sit tenth, with 18 points from their 13 games.

“All of our attention has to go on the league now and there’s no reason why we can’t finish higher than we’ve ever finished before,” said Condon.

“That’s our target and has been since the start of the season.

“We can definitely do it and it’s a realistic goal.

“We know we’re not going to win the league or finish second or third.

“But it would be lovely to look back and be able to say that was the best season in FC Clacton history.

“It would mean a lot to the boys.

“It’s nice to be in the right half of the table, rather than being in trouble right from the start, and it’s exciting to see the potential we’ve got.”

Condon felt his side missed a golden opportunity to progress in the cup, on Tuesday night.

He fired his side level early in the second half but when the tie went to penalties, Kevin Coyle fired over and Ben Parkin saw his effort saved by James Braybrook.

“It’s definitely a missed opportunity,” said 12-goal top-scorer Condon.

“We’re never going to win the FA Cup.

“Realistically, we’re not going to win our league and we’re already out of the Vase.

“This was a chance to get some silverware and you only have to string four wins together and you’re in the final.

“Then anything can happen.

“We felt we should have won and came off feeling quite bitter that we hadn’t done the business.

“We took the game by the scruff of the neck and felt that if there was going to be another goal, it was only going to be scored by us.”
