ESSEX secondary schools have been commended for their “excellent results” after achieving an improvement in GCSEs results.

GCSE pupils achieving five or more A* - C grades including English and maths climbed from 56.5. per cent in 2014 to 58.4 per cent in 2015, new figures from the Department for Education study revealed.

The results mean Essex has climbed from 85th to 56th in the local authority rankings.

Councillor Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “These excellent results are testament to the hard work and commitment of pupils and staff at schools across the county every day.

“Essex is on an excellent school improvement journey. More than four in five of the county’s schools are now rated as good or outstanding by Ofsted and, as today’s data shows, exam results are also continuing to improve.

“Essex is a wonderful county to teach in and I would urge any teachers looking for a fresh challenge to join the Essex journey.

“As a council, we remain committed to ensuring pupils in Essex receive the best possible education and I look forward to continuing to work closely with schools to achieve this.”
