A DETERMINED charity cyclist whose bike was stolen has issued a heartfelt message of thanks after generous residents funded a replacement.

Francis Mills, of Una Road, Parkeston, is set to cycle 299 miles from London to Paris on July 24 to fight against Batten disease in the name of Harry Rolph Wills, seven, of Dovercourt, who is battling the disease.

With the challenge only weeks away, Mr Mills’ £550 white Trek bike was stolen by crooks in Colchester on July 20.

Mr Mills said: “Even people I didn’t know made kind donations.

"I’m very grateful for the kindness and efforts.”

He received enough money to replace equipment that was stolen with the bike, and will put the leftover £140 into the charity fund – which is now up to £2,500.

Malkiat Singh, 70, who runs Eyes Rite, in Dovercourt, launched a campaign to see the bike replaced, donating funds and urging others to join him.

He said: “I would like to thank the generous people of Dovercourt who really did donate quite a bit to help Mr Mills.

“The response was very good.”
