WORRIED parents fear being left in the lurch for a second time over funding for care of their disabled children.

Many parents who send their children to Mistley Kids Club are concerned after learning that funding provided by Essex County Council cannot be used to cover the cost.

The council provides monthly funds to parents for use of the service, via an organisation called Essex Pass.

Julie Everest has two children who use the club and has been told verbally that the direct payments can no longer be used to cover the cost.

She said: “Social workers and clubs are aware verbally, but parents have not been given any formal notice, no warning of when to make alter native payment arrangements nor anything in writing.

“Essex County Council has told Essex Pass to stop paying any bills from any kids’ clubs.”

She added parents feared they would not be able to afford individual carers .

Rosemary Smith, chairman for the club, said: “I am very concerned about this.

“I have written to one of the top officers for children’s services at Essex County Council seeking clarification.”

Dick Madden, the council’s cabinet member for children, said: “Some restrictions are placed on the types of services direct payments may be used for.

“However, the council will consider any reasonable request from families about direct payments, and I would encourage any parents who want to discuss their child’s needs further to get in touch with the council.”

Last year, parents were left upset after the council initially withdrew funding for one-to-one supervision.
