GRATEFUL volunteers have thanked the people of Harwich for their efforts in helping disadvantaged children.

Volunteers with the Harwich branch of the Salvation Army say they helped more than 200 children over the Christmas period, as well as putting on a successful Christmas meal.

The annual Christmas present appeal sees volunteers put together parcels for local families referred by social services.

Toys and sweets were donated by Morrisons, Asda and the Rotary Club of Harwich and Dovercourt.

The doors of the Salvation Army citadel in George Street will be opened once more on Friday, January 27 for a social evening.

Visitors are urged to join volunteers for a bacon sandwich and a range of card games from 7pm.

Richard Wearmouth, comman ding officer, said “I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped us with the Christmas appeal, especially to Asda, Morrisons and the Harwich and Dovercourt Rotary Club.

“Last year we helped around 160 children so there is a bit of an increase in demand.

“Thankfully we were very well supported.

“Our Christmas lunch was really well attended and was a lovely day.

“A great time was had by all.

“I would urge anyone who wants a chat, some company and a bacon sandwich to come along to our citadel in George Street for our social evening.”
