AN OLIVIER and Tony award winning production by the National Theatre is heading to the Electric Palace cinema in Harwich.

The historic cinema, in Kings Quay Street, is one of a number of venues across the country getting set to live screen Peter Shaffer’s iconic play Amadeus.

After winning multiple awards when it had its premiere at the National Theatre in 1979, Amadeus was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film.

The story follows Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who arrives in Vienna – the music capital of the world – determined to make a splash.

Awestruck by the genius of the rowdy young prodigy, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy it.

Seized by obsessive jealousy Salieri begins a war with Mozart, with music and ultimately, with God.

In this new production, directed by Michael Longhurst, Lucian Msamati plays Salieri – with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia.

Msamati is known for his performance as notorious pirate Salladhor Saan in the hugely popular TV show Game of Thrones.

A spokesman for the Electric Palace said: “This is a huge title, I understand that it is almost completely sold out at the National Theatre and so these live screenings may represent the only opportunity for people to see it.

“We are expecting huge demand for tickets.”

Having journeyed from the West End to Broadway and an Oscar-winning adaptation, the play has returned to its original home.

This is a note-perfect production by a rising director, giving a fresh and inventive new reading to a much-loved classic.

The play will be screened at 7pm on Thursday, February 2.

Tickets cost £12.50 and can be booked by visiting electricpalace.com or by calling the box office on 01255 553333.
