PLANS for a £70million state-of-the-art train depot near Manningtree have been welcomed as a major boost for Essex by County Hall bosses.

Abellio Greater Anglia last week announced the former Wardle Storeys and ICI site in Factory Lane, Brantham, will be used to maintain 20 brand new train units set be introduced in East Anglia from 2019.

The regeneration of the derelict chemical works will see the creation of between 30 and 100 jobs.

Kevin Bentley, deputy leader and cabinet member for economic growth, infrastructure and partnerships, said the plans could boost the local economy.

He said: "Essex is one of the fastest growing counties in the country and the continued and sustained improvement of our transport links is vital to continuing this growth.

“We have excellent new rolling stock coming to the line after Greater Anglia was awarded the franchise and now we welcome this announcement that money will be invested in railway infrastructure.

"This will not only help to keep those trains operating but will also create new jobs and employment opportunities in Essex.

“This is a welcome development and yet another example of significant investment in the continued economic growth of the county.”
