RAMMBLERS are being encouraged to step out to take part in the 13th annual Mayflower run and walk.

The Rotary Club of Manningtree Stour Valley has organised the event on Sunday, which starts at the Low Lighthouse in Harwich at 10.30am for runners and 10.40 for walkers.

Spurring them on at the startline will be Eighties sitcom star David Webb, who played Stanley Mathews in Hi-De-Hi, filmed in Dovercourt.

Entrants will follow the Essex Way, which runs up the estuary of the River Stour between Harwich and Manningtree, for 13 miles or finish in Wrabness for a shorter route.

Rotary President Colin Daines said “We are really pleased that David Webb is able to join us on Sunday at the start of the Mayflower Run and Walk.

“He spoke at a recent Rotary meeting about his life in show business, with lots of anecdotes about the making of Hi-De-Hi.

“Much of Hi-De-Hi was filmed at Warners Holiday Camp, Dovercourt not far from where the Mayflower Run and Walk will start.”

Entry is £10 in advance and £12 on the day, children under 12 go free but must be registered.

The entry fee covers the administrative costs of the event and contributes to the club’s own charity fund.

Greater Anglia will as in previous years offer free train travel between Manningtree and Harwich on presentation of their Eventbrite booking form.
