ESSEX Police has launched a campaign to increase its number of volunteer Special Constables from 340 to 700 by the year 2020.

My Other Life showcases the opportunities open to specials and the variety involved in contrast to their day jobs.

Special Constables gave up more than 10,000 hours of their own time in just one month to police Essex.

In May, the 340 volunteer officers spent 10,637 hours policing, 4,200 hours carrying out patrols, made 265 arrests and spent 158 hours searching for missing people.

The specials also spent 180 hours dealing with mental health related incidents, carried out 106 breath tests, submitted 732 traffic reports, 43 domestic abuse reports and carried out around 70 stop searches.

Supt Simon Anslow, who is leading Essex Police’s programme to recruit specials, said the figures demonstrate the valued difference the volunteers make to their community.

“The number of hours that our Special Constables have volunteered for front-line policing is truly remarkable.

“It shows not only the value and difference they make to keeping Essex safer but also their commitment to their role.

“We’re looking for ordinary people to help serve Essex as volunteer police officers.

“If you want to be a part of something that makes a positive difference to you and the communities you work in then please apply.

“Whether you can work 16hrs or 60hrs a month, Monday afternoons or Saturday nights there’s a place for you with us.

“If you want to problem-solve in communities, keep our roads safe, investigate serious crime or be first on scene at an emergency there’s an opportunity for you.

“It’s not an easy job - sometimes it’s not even a fun job - but it’s rewarding work and it will be the best thing you’ve ever done.”

The campaign is also supported by a dedicated section of the force’s website, which provides the full details about becoming a special.

Special Constables have full police powers, uniforms, equipment and training.
