A CIRCULAR fort build to protect Harwich from a feared Napoleonic invasion was filled with fun and laughter on Monday.

Hundreds of people crossed the moat to visit the Redoubt Fort for its annual open day.

Traditional fete games were on offer alongside historic tours of the fort and it’s exhibitions.

Colin Farnell, chairman of the Harwich Society, which owns and runs the fort, said: “We had more than 900 people, lots of visitors and locals, it was a brilliant day.

“Certainly in recent years this has been the best one we’ve had.

“The weather was very kind to us and we had things like splat the rat, spin the wheel of fortune, and toss the ball in the bucket.

“We were doing guided tours that went to all the different rooms and guns.

“It was superb.”

Money raised from the event will go towards a major project to pull up 50-year-old flooring and lay a new concrete floor in one of the fort’s rooms ready for a new exhibition.
