A VILLAGE is set to lose its only post office within weeks unless residents can fight to save it.
The Co-op store in Brantham has a post office integrated into its counter service. But this is set to close in November.
Babergh councillor Alastair McCraw, said: “It’s only been in operation for a year. There used to be a separate post office behind a screen at the back of the shop and then it formed part of the counter service.
“If it closes there’s East Bergholt but it’s a considerable distance away and there is Manningtree at the Co-op.
“It’s not easy without your own transport to get across to Manningtree - the bus doesn’t go there all the time.”
The closure is set to be discussed at Brantham Parish Council’s next meeting on Wednesday at the village hall in New Village. Mr McCraw added: “We are most likely going to lobby them. They are doing this in November so we haven’t got long.”
A Post Office spokesperson said: “The postmaster for Brantham Post Office has resigned and the branch is due to close at the current location on November 15.
“The vacancy is being advertised. Any re-location will be subject to six week public location.
“Alternative branches in the area include Manningtree and Honeycroft Lawford.”
