HUNDREDS of youngsters rolled up to the official launch of a state-of-the-art skate park.

The sun came out for the launch party of a £220,000 skate park in Lower Marine Parade, Dovercourt on Saturday.

The new park has been built by Maverick Industries on the same site, next to Dovercourt Bay Lifestyles.

The facility has been designed for skateboarders, in-liners, BMX and scooter riders.

It’s top features include an open bowl, driveway and street section and because it’s made of spray concrete, the facility can be used all year round.

Jo Henderson, Harwich councillor, said: "We had such a brilliant day and even the weather was great.

"It's hard to judge how many people came but there must have been about 150 kids and their families.

"The event was really successful and really good, and people asked if we would put it on again next year.

"We are so proud the project has come together for the young people of Dovercourt."

She said Freddy Gravenor, who was one of the original campaigners for the skate park refurbishment, came to open it after all of these years.

At the event there were a range of competitions and Maverick Industries gave away nearly £900 worth of prizes.

Jo said she is looking to hold the event annually if funding can be acquired.

Maverick Skateparks said on Facebook: "A massive thanks to everyone who helped make the Dovercourt Jam in Harwich, Essex, such a rad day."
