FOOTIE fans are being encouraged to act responsibly as England face their first World Cup in semi-final in 28 years.

Essex police is calling on fans and businesses to be sensible ahead of the game tomorrow.

The force has said there has been pockets of disorder across Essex similar to what has been seen nationally, including incidents of criminal damage, blocked roads, altercations and anti-social behaviour.

These incidents have mostly been alcohol-fuelled.

During and after tomorrow’s game police will have additional officers working while our local and community policing teams work respond to emergencies as usual.

Assistant Chief Constable Pippa Mills said: “We want people to go out in good spirits and full of optimism that England can reach a first World Cup final since 1966.

“However, we will not tolerate any unnecessary and senseless behaviour that disrupts our communities and ruins things for law abiding fans. If you are determined to go out and engage in this behaviour, we will detain you and bring you into custody.

“I would also continue to urge businesses to play their part by making sure they have the right measures in place to prevent and manage anti-social behaviour. People will go out with their families and friends in large numbers, so please be prepared and have a plan of action in place.

“Let’s all be united as one team and continue to enjoy watching England on their World Cup journey.”
