ENGLAND’S most-capped footballer has called on England fans in Colchester to enjoy the Three Lions’ World Cup run but not to ruin it with yobbish behaviour.
The former England goalkeeper, who now lives on Mersea Island with wife, Steffi, told the Gazette he has enjoyed watching on as enthusiastic fans get behind their side but warned things shouldn’t get out of hand.
The 68-year-old, who won 125 caps between 1970 and 1990, was the elder statesman of the last England side to reach a World Cup semi-final in Italia 90.

He said: “I consider myself a local now and have really enjoyed watching all the celebrations in Colchester. It’s a pleasure to see the nation coming together.
“You have to realise in the 1990 game we didn’t have social media at all so I really hadn’t a clue what was happening back in the UK.
“I was in my zone doing our job for our country completely oblivious to the hype.
“So for me I’ve been really surprised at what I’m witnessing. It’s been such a pleasure.
He also revealed he has turned down large fees to watch tonight’s crunch game against Croatia... in favour of watching it alone in his man cave.

He said: “Personally I’ll be watching the game in my man room on my own.
“I’m too nervous to be with people despite Steph and I being offered large fees to watch the game with individuals.
“If we win, that will be different - a flight to Russia could be on the cards.”
The legendary goalkeeper also had his say on the new man between the sticks.
For many, it was a tight call between Jordan Pickford and Jack Butland before the tournament started but Shilts has had his eye on the Everton shotstopper for some months.
He said: “I’ve been very impressed with him. I chose Pickford and Butland about 18 months ago even when Joe Hart was still around.
“They were my top two, but Pickford had a great season with Everton which is why I chose him as the number one despite some critics.
“I stood by my belief. He’s a terrific goalkeeper and so far he’s proved me right but we still have a way to go.”
He also labelled tonight’s match as England’s toughest but urged manager Gareth Southgate to stick with his starting 11 despite Croatia’s formidable midfield.
