Parkeston: Cubs get first girl members

A PARKESTON cubs group has initiated it’s first girl members.

St Edmunds Cub Pack has been taking boys shooting, abseiling and camping for years but from now on two girls will be pitching tents with them.

Ellie Redburn, seven, and Kelsey Debenham, eight, were accepted into the group at an initiation ceremony at the Redoubt Fort on July 1 with third new member Joe Whittle, eight.

“When we first told the boys we had girls on the waiting list they said they didn’t want them involved because they had enough of them at school and home,” said Glynis Zimmerman, akele of the group.

“But they have really risen to the occasion and taken it in their stride.”

Traditionally girls are members of the Brownies and Guides.

But more and more girls have applied to join the cubs and scouts nationwide.

“We do more adventurous and dirty activities that girls nowadays want to try,” said Mrs Zimmerman, 52.

“The girls came camping in the rain with us and Ellie, who is also a Brownie, thought it was brilliant and said she couldn’t believe she was actually doing it.”

Ellie and Kelsey were initiated into the pack after they said the cub scouts promise and law on Wednesday evening.
