A PROPOSED Tesco superstore has moved from Manningtree to one of its neighbouring villages.

The 30,000sq ft store in Station Road would now technically be in Lawford.

The revelation was made after representatives from the supermarket giant met with Manningtree Town Council to unveil changes to its planning application.

Tesco had originally said it would sandwich the store between Manningtree and a 300-space car park it plans to build.

But revised plans - set to be resubmitted to Tendring Council next month- show the car park and Tesco have switched places.

The land is on the Manningtree and Lawford boundary.

The switch-round has left the car park in Manningtree but the store, which would create 200 jobs, in Lawford.

It is hoped that by having the car park nearer to Manningtree, more people will be attracted to shop in the town.

North Essex MP Bernard Jenkin, who attended the meeting, described the new plans as a “breakthrough”.

Debate has surrounded putting the store in England’s smallest town for more than two years.
