FOR once losing seems to be more fun than winning for quiz night teams.

Harwich and Dovercourt Cricket Club holds a quiz night once a month for members and friends and families to test their general knowledge.

But far from hanging their heads in shame, losing groups have been taking the prize to far off destinations to pose for a picture with it.

Garry Calver, who sets the questions, said: “It started a year ago when one of the teams finished bottom for the first time.

“One of the members was off to Australia so they took the wooden spoon with them and had a photgraph with it in front of the Sydney Opera House.

“It’s been everywhere from the Sahara Desert to the Arctic Circle so far.”

But a spoon finally found fame when it bumped into Craig Charles, who plays cabbie Lloyd Mullaney in Coronation Street, in Birmingham last week.

“My daughter and her partner went to a Red Dwarf convention and took a spoon on the off-chance that Craig would pose with it,” said Mr Calver.

Lynsey Calver and Darren Hayles, part of the Upper Dovercourt Co-op’s quiz team, were given the spoon after they came last in the September quiz.

Mr Charles was bemused but otherwise happy to pose with the spoon.

The competition is now on for the next losing team to beat the previous photograph.

The next quiz starts at 7.30pm on Monday, November 2 at Harwich and Dovercourt Cricket Club.
