A TEENAGER is scaling new heights to raise awareness after her gran was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Jodie Lovett, of Bruges Close, Dovercourt, is looking to raise hundreds of pounds by abseiling 450 feet down Guys Hospital Tower in London.
The 18-year-old decided to take the plunge for Marie Curie Cancer Care because of the help the charity’s nurses are giving her step nan, who was diagnosed with an aggressive, incurable cancer.
Joanne Maasz**CORR**, Jodie’s mum, said she was very proud of her daughter.
“Jodie’s step nan is in her final phases of cancer at the moment,” she said.
“We have all seen how brilliant the Marie Curie nurses are that take care of her and give her so much support.
“Everyone in the family just feels really helpless.
“Jodie had been looking to do something to help and she thought this would be a challenge for her as she hasn’t abseiled anything above 100 feet before.
“Guys Hospital Tower is the highest building you can abseil down in London.
“So it’s a bit of a way up.
“I think it’s going to be a bit of a shock for her when she gets up there.
“We are all really proud of her fo doing it, especially her gran.”
Jodie, who is used to abseiling down climbing walls, will be taking part in the challenge on August 28 with a friend from London.
She needs £275 to be able to perform the abseil and has so far raised just over £200.
“She is well on her way to getting the money she needs to take part but we just now need to build up sponsorship,” said Mrs Maasz.
