Harwich: Roads flood from heavy downpour

ROADS were closed and firefighters were called to pump out water from a home after heavy downpours on Tuesday night.

Dovercourt firefighters were called to a bungalow in Parkeston Road in the town at 7.30pm after 10mm of rain fell over North Essex in the space of one hour.

Robbie May, firefighter, said: “I think the bungalow has been flooded before.

“Around the side of the home is ditches, which had filled up.

“Most of the house was flooded by about half a foot of water.

“We pumped it out.”

Elsewhere Low Road in Dovercourt was closed due to a large amount of surface water blocking the road.

Michael Siddle, manager of Greenacres Caravan Park on Low Road, said: “You couldn’t get in or put of the caravan park, my garden was full up with water aswell.”

Police blocked off the road after being called by a concerned resident at 6.30pm.

Debbie Chisholm, spokesman for the police, said: “The man had blocked the road with his vehicle to prevent an accident, and officers in a car blocked off the other side with their vehicle.

“The road was clear again at 7pm after officers cleared the drains.”

Mayes Lane in Ramsey and Little Oakley was also flooded by the rainfall.

The met office recorded 10mm of rainfall in North Essex in July until Tuesday night, which saw that figure double.
