NEW small firms starting up in Tendring could be in line for a 50 per cent discount in their business rates.

Tendring Council has been given the chance to carry out a review of its policy under changes in Government rules which could see new businesses given the discount for their first six months.

The council says it wants to support new small firms.

Cabinet spokesman Paul Honeywood said the council wanted to send out the message that Tendring is open for business.

“We are trying to do what we can to give new small firms a helping hand and encourage companies into our area and provide jobs for unemployed people,” he said.

“In this case it is all about saving them some money on their business rates with 50 per cent up for grabs for small new start-ups.

“This will not be available for the large supermarkets but for those smaller shops and retailers who need a bit of support in the early months.”

Mr Honeywood councils have now been given increased flexibility to take into account local economic conditions.

When considering whether to award a discount the council will be looking for a positive impact for residents and taxpayers in the district.
