A BID to carry out work paving the way for major development on a Walton caravan park has been knocked back by town councillors.

Developers have asked for permission to alter the ground levels of a south-west section of the now-closed Martello Caravan Park site.

The site is subject to huge development plans, including building 250 new houses.

The front of the caravan park was to have been redeveloped by Tesco, but it pulled the plug on its superstore proposal earlier this month.

It is thought this latest planning application is to allow site owners to raise the ground level so that section of land no longer carries a flood risk.

But Frinton and Walton Town Council recommended refusal of the plan because it did not have enough information about the planned work.

Councillor Mark Cossens said: “One of the things I would like to see here is a transport plan.

“This would involve bringing in huge amounts of clay and there are no details on how it would be brought on, or what would happen at the site.”

Walton councillor Alec Moss said: “This is yet another jigsaw piece in the larger redevelopment of the Martello.

“At the moment, none of the pieces are joining up. There are lots of things going on there and lots of plans for each corner of the site.

“It would be better if they came to us and gave us the complete picture of their vision for the Martello so we could make informed decisions on the smaller planning applications.”
