A MUM from Clacton is raising funds to help the victims of the earthquake in Nepal.

Bimala Rai, whose father Jiwan is Nepalese and who has relatives and friends in the country, is organising a 14-mile sponsored walk from Clacton to Walton Pier in May.

She wants to collect as much money as possible to assist those who have suffered as a result of Saturday’s disaster.

More than 5,000 people are already known to have lost their lives and many thousands more have been injured.

Miss Rai, who lives in London Road, already has a charity that supports the House of Hope orphanage on the outskirts of Kathmandu.

“Fortunately, all the children are fine, although they have to sleep outside the building for a few days until the tremors are over,” she said.

“We have spoken to our relatives and the earthquake did not directly affect any of them, but there are so many thousands of people who have lost everything they own, including their homes.

“People in Clacton have been very generous and helped support the orphanage, but now I am raising funds for the victims of the earthquake.

“As we have contacts in Nepal, we can ensure the money will get to those who need it.”

Miss Rai is hoping people will join her on the walk, sponsor someone who is walking or donate towards the cause.

For those taking part, the walk will leave Clacton Pier at 10am on May 17.

Anyone who wants to help can email Miss Rai at bimmie@hot mail.co.uk or call 07912 783500.
