THE Samaritans are set to launch a new initiative in Tendring to cope with an increase in demand.

The charity is starting a new face-to-face service in Clacton as part of a scheme to help people in need of support.

Volunteers will be available to talk to people at the Coastal Community Centre in Pathfields Road every Thursday from 10am to 1pm. It started on Thursday.

Branch director Virginia Druitt said: “There is an identified need for Samaritans’ support in the Clacton area.

"Outreach events have confirmed to us that local people welcomed being able to talk with Samaritans’ volunteers.

“Some people welcome the opportunity to talk face-to-face with a Samaritans volunteer rather than use the phone or e-mail.

“Although the local Samaritans centre is in Colchester, we also cover the Tendring peninsula and we are mindful of the need for accessible emotional support in the community.

“We wish to increase awareness of the availability of Samaritans’ service to the people of Clacton and we recognise that those who might benefit from our support may not be able to make the journey to Colchester or be aware of our service.”
