CONTROVERSIAL plans to create a play area on Frinton’s “sacrosanct” Greensward could be revived.

Kiosk Field and the Leas, at either end of the seafront, have been identified as potential areas to install play equipment for youngsters.

The scheme was suggested at a meeting of Frinton and Walton Town Council’s recreation and amenities committee.

But several town councillors fiercely opposed the plan when it went before the full council.

Frinton councillor Vanda Watling said: “Our sacrosanct Greensward is yet again being mentioned for a play area.

“It is already a play area without restrictions and it doesn’t need any equipment on it.

“Three of the four Frinton members on this council would hate to see the Greensward used like this and we have been arguing that on behalf of our residents. We feel we are being ignored.

“I think a playground would be detrimental to the greensward and fear it could be the thin end of the wedge.”

But it was eventually decided the council would explore putting a play area on the Kiosk Field or the Leas.

Eight members voted in favour, with six against.

Terry Allen – the Frinton councillor in favour of the plan – said: “Our youngsters need somewhere safe to play.

“I know there is a play park coming as part of the Wittonwood Road development, but it will be tucked away at the back of a housing estate.

“Nobody will want to use it and we desperately need a safe and more accessible space for our children.”

A previous proposal for the greensward sparked controversy in 2012.

Plans were launched by the town council for a multiuse games area on Kiosk Field, to be created using section 106 cash.

The plan was rejected by Tendring Council due to the strength of opposition.
