TRAVELLERS will be ordered to leave land in Jaywick tomorrow.

Caravans and cars moved onto the market site in Brooklands, which is owned by Tendring Council on Friday.

They were later joined by others who left London Road in Clacton after receiving a Direction to Leave followed by a court summons from the Essex Countywide Traveller Unit.

Paul Honeywood, cabinet member for housing, said that the council is at different stages with each group.

“Those that arrived on Friday have already had a Direction to Leave and tomorrow will be issued with a court summons,” he said.

“The second group, who have only just joined the others on our site in Jaywick, will be issued with a Direction to Leave and if they have not gone within 24 hours will also receive a court summons.”

Mr Honeywood said that as far as the council is aware all the travellers remaining in the district are at Jaywick, although there was one lone caravan left in London Road this morning which was expected to join the others.

“As we have said before it is a game of cat and mouse and we will continue to act in the only way open to us and move them on – albeit they find somewhere else within Tendring,” he added.

“We will continue to do that until such time as they leave altogether or the law gets changed and we have other powers at our disposal.

“I really do urge residents not to give the Travellers work as that is what is keeping them in Tendring for such a long time this year and it is very frustrating.”
