JAYWICK residents are sending a message to Number Ten Downing Street.

UKIP activists Ron Reeves and Rosina Herriott expect to send Prime Minister David Cameron around 100 of the pro-EU taxpayer-funded leaflets distributed locally in the past week.

But many others could well be on their way.

The pair have collected 50 already and expect to gather as many again. They say unlike the government leaflet, they will pay the postage of the referendum leaflets they are returning to sender themselves, so the taxpayer is not left with a bill.

“We were disgusted the way it came about, with the taxpayer having to pay £9.3 million for them to be delivered,” Ron said.

Rosina said many people have torn up the government leaflets but some had returned them with ‘rude remarks’.

The pair have called on hundreds of houses around Jaywick, suggesting the PM is in for a mighty postbag.

“Of the people we have spoken to, 25-30 per cent have sent them back before we got to them,” she added.

National campaigns are also calling for people to return their government leaflets.

More than 200,000 people also signed an online petition opposing the spending of taxpayer’s money on the leaflets, leading parliament to stage a debate on the issue on May 9.
