A MUM claims youngsters' lives are at risk after waiting more than two years for new safety fencing to be put up a round an electricity substation.

Julia Pecchia's home in Clacton is right next to the high-voltage substation in Windsor Avenue.

But there is only temporary security fencing to prevent trespassers getting on to the site.

And Julia says the fencing blows down in storms leaving the substation unprotected.

"There was a proper fence when we first moved here but it collapsed in the bad weather two and a half years ago," she said.

"I contacted UK Power Networks and they came along and put up a temporary fence but that was more than two years ago.

"The railings aren't secure. It's dangerous to children.

"You can easily move the railings and kids could get in and be electrocuted.

"I haven't got kids myself but it's a health and safety issue.

"My nieces and nephew come over here and I'm concerned they could pull the railings down.

"If there was a permanent fence up there there is no way they could get in."

The yellow 'Danger of death' warning signs have blown down too.

"Every time we have bad weather it falls apart," said Julia.

"I'm getting fed up with it.

"I've chased them up but they keep coming up with excuses.

"They are big company so I would have thought they could deal with it more professionally.

"All it takes is for one child to get through those railings into the substation and be electrocuted, but UK Power Networks don't seem to be taking any notice."

A UK Power Networks spokesman said: “We are sorry for the delay in installing a new fence around our substation in Windsor Avenue, Clacton.

“After relocating our equipment to the corner of the site it took longer than we would have liked to establish ownership of the adjacent fence lines. This has now been resolved and new fencing is due to be installed this week.”
