A SHELTERED housing scheme in Walton is set to be reviewed because the council is struggling to fill it.

Spendells House in Walton has the worst occupancy rate of Tendring Council’s ten sheltered housing centres across the district.

Viability reports have now been commissioned for Spendells House, as well as another poor-performing scheme in Lawford.

Tendring Council spokesman Paul Price said: “We need to look at all the various options and there are commercial consequences going forward if we do not fill these units.

“We have advertised where we have empty units and at other sites we have long waiting lists – it all depends on the type of accommodation and the location.”

There are 325 units across the ten sheltered housing schemes and just over half are bedsit studio flats with shared bathrooms.

The latest stats show 82.5 per cent are let and tenanted while 17.5 per cent are empty.

The council says it cannot speculate on the future of sheltered housing schemes before the report results are analysed.
