MORE patrols are being launched to tackle street drinkers in Clacton town centre.

Essex Police and Tendring Council are joining forces in the operation which starts on Friday.

It is in response to concerns raised by the Pier Ward Forum and other complaints received about the issue.

More than 25 calls have been made over the past week – mainly about the nuisance caused by the drinkers congregating in certain areas, as well as the effect it has on the image of the town.

Insp Julia Finch said police officers will team up with council enforcement officers.

“We had officers out over the weekend – on both Saturday and Sunday – and a number of warnings were given out,” she said.

“It is now the aim to step up our presence on the streets starting with this weekend.”

Council community safety boss Carlo Guglielmi said that the problem is being taken "extremely seriously".

He said: "When we find people drinking and taking part in anti-social behaviour I will be looking for fines to be issued and followed up if they are not paid.”

Incidents can be reported on the anti-social behaviour hotline on O1255 686359 or online at tendringdc.gov.uk.
