A 300-tonne haystack went up in smoke at a farm at Great Bentley.
Firefighters from Clacton were called to the scene of the blaze, at Flag Hill, just after 11.30pm last night.
Crews were still at the scene at 8am today.
The haystack measured 22m by 22m and was said to be 100 per cent alight.
Two Clacton fire crews who were originally called out were later relieved by firefighters from Weeley and Colchester.
Firefighters remain at the scene. The cause of the blaze is unknown.
