Frinton’s new fish restaurant has finally landed.

Pier One- Simply Fish opened this month in Connaught Avenue in the former Jade Chinese restaurant after a six month delay.

Owner Peter Goring said there were “renovation problems” including damp which have cost him more than £170,000 to fix.

“It’s had a top to toe renovation. Everything has been replaced. There was nothing that could be used. It was disgusting,” he said.

Peter has been in the restaurant trade for several decades, all his working life, previously owning six restaurants around London, plus a nightclub.

But he has now divorced, sold the businesses, and after falling in love with a Frinton woman, came to live in the town six months ago, which led to the restaurant.

Peter said Frinton lacks a fine fish restaurant, though he offers a small take-away menu too.

The interior has a nautical theme to match the seaside setting, with Peter promising the best “food, ambience and value for money.”

He saw the former Chinese restaurant offering a “quant, bijou place with potential.”

And since opening, Pier One has “been well-received with the local inhabitants.”

Peter added: “I love everybody in Frinton. It’s a very pleasant place to be. I should have come here sooner.”

Pier One employs nine staff, including manager Toni Scanu from Clacton and head chef Jonathan Kear from Lawford, who last worked at the Suffolk Food Hall near Ipswich.

Born-and-raised in the area, Toni has been in the restaurant trade for more than 20 years and previously worked for Giogio’s Ristorante in Holland.

Toni said since opening, Pier One has been “very busy because Frinton has been crying out for a decent restaurant.”

“I would like to say our fish and chips are the best in the area. We spent much time trying to perfect out batter recipe. Our principle is we use the best quality ingredients and the freshest so the customers get the best experience,” he added.

Customers have been posting favourable reviews on TripAdvisor with one citing “the best cod and chips anywhere within a 20 mile radius.”

Another commented: “Honestly the food is amazing I could not fault anything. The service was perfect the staff very helpful.”
