A MAJOR housing development of almost 100 homes on the edge of Thorpe has been given the go-ahead.

Tendring Council planners last night agreed to grant outline permission for the scheme put forward by local developer Scott Properties on land east of Landermere Road.

A large number of villagers turned up to the planning committee meeting at Weeley to oppose the plans for up to 98 houses.

The council had received more than 100 objections from residents.

Their main concern was over the extra traffic that could be generated by the new homes in the congested illage.

There were also concerns about the narrow pavements along Landermere Road.

But the planning committee said there was no firm evidence to reject the application on highway grounds, and Essex County Council's highways department found the scheme acceptable.

More detailed plans will go before the council at a later date.

Permission was granted with five votes in favour, none against and three abstentions.

The decision was met with anger among residents and there were cries of "shame" at the meeting.

A legal agreement will be drawn up within six months to cover affordable housing and developer contributions to health, education and a play area in the village.
