A TWO-week-old baby deer is recovering at a Thorrington animal sanctuary after being discovered trapped in a ditch.

The tiny muntjac was taken to Wildlives by the RSPCA after being found by a member of the public.

Sanctuary boss Rosie Catford said: "He was found in a ditch covered in mud and soaking wet.

"He's got a few minor wounds - probably from when he struggled to get out of the ditch and he was very distressed when he came in.

"Being picked up by what he thought were predators would have been very, very stressful.

"It was pretty difficult to get him to feed last night when he came in and I spent ages trying to get him to take the bottle.

"When he did he was so exhausted he fell asleep, but today he is getting used to the bottle a bit better and hopefully we can get him fed and well.

"But he will be with us for six or seven months before we can release him back where he was found."

Staff at the centre are still trying to come up with a name for the fawn.

Rosie added: "We've had new-born baby muntjacs before now but we think he is about two weeks old."
