AN event to promote safe cycling is being held following a serious incident involving a teenage cyclist getting trapped under a bus.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service alongside Safer Essex Roads Partnership are putting on the event to engage students with cycle safety.

The event will be held for students at Clacton County High School on Wednesday, February 22.

The idea for the event was triggered after a former Clacton County High School student suffered from multiple injuries when he was involved in a road accident with a bus at Skelmersdale Road, Clacton, on January 24.

The 16-year-old cyclist was flown by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital with serious injuries after he was released from beneath the single decker bus.

Trapped - A teenage cyclist was trapped under a bus in a road incident in Skelmersdale Road, Clacton.

The cycle safety event will start at 2pm with a presentation delivered by Essex Fire and Rescue Service's road safety team.

After the presentation, students will be able to take part in a number of safety engagement activities until 3pm.

An Essex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Cycling is a fantastic activity, with significant health benefits - however, it can also be a risky activity.

“Essex Fire and Rescue Service and its partners within the Safer Essex Roads Partnership want to raise awareness of the potential risks and consequences of cycling on the roads and to highlight some good practices.

“Our main aim is for people to be safer and more confident on the road.”

A Safer Essex Roads Partnership spokesman said: “Working with the school we are putting on this short notice cycle safety event to engage and promote cycle safety with students from the school who regularly cycle to and from school.”
