SPORTY youngsters have been enjoying some half-term fun with special events staged at leisure centres across Tendring.

Hundreds of youngsters took part in holiday activities designed to get tempt them away from their computer games and TVs and to keep them fit and entertained.

Pools, sports halls, tennis courts and all-weather pitches have played host to sports sessions.

Tendring Council even brought in qualified coaches to put children through their paces and give them valuable tips.

Lynda McWilliams, councillor responsible for leisure, said: “It is a fact that these days many youngsters spent many hours in front of the computer or television and on their iPads.

“It is our goal to try to entice them into our facilities and promote healthier lifestyles and wellbeing.

“If they enjoy themselves they may make it a regular part of their week – and they may also bring their friends along too.

“For some it will be the first time they have been to our sites but we hope it certainly won’t be the last.”

Sports on offer included football, tennis, trampolining, wall climbing and basketball.

There were also sessions in netball, gymnastics and dodgeball.

Youngsters could also try out street dance, roller disco, cheerleading and swimming.
