A TESCO cash machine feared to have an illegal card skimmer device on it, is safe to use.

Rumours an ATM machine outside of the Tesco Superstore, at the Brook Retail Park, in Clacton, had been fixed with a skimmer, recently began circulating on Facebook.

However, a spokesperson for Tesco confirmed the rumours are false.

She said: "After speaking with the store manager, he has assured the ATM machines were checked on Sunday, and again today.

"There does not seem to be any signs of tampering and/or illegal devices."

Action Fraud gives this advice to help spot the signs of cash machine fraud:

  • You find a wobbly or bulky part that does not seem to belong with the machine, such as a cover over the card slot or a loose keypad.
  • Purchases and withdrawals start appearing on your account you do not remember making.
  • Some cash machines are built entirely by fraudsters. Be cautious using a ‘standalone’ machine, rather than a ‘hole in the wall’, which is embedded in the front of a building such as a bank.

If you think you have been a victim of cash machine fraud, first call your card issuer's emergency number to cancel your card.

Then report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online here.
