TAKING a wry look at the idea of being English, acoustic duo Face Furniture leads audiences along an aural journey of multiculturalism and love for our UK neighbours.

Performing songs from their new album Discovering England, the show will include reggae played on the ukulele, songs about landscape, longing, the English Music Hall and a place where “there’s a kindness, a refuge, a welcome, a home” as per their lyrics.

The musical pair say the album is about “bigging up our humility and reclaiming love of place”.

Face Furniture is comprised of songwriter and poet Adrian May and double-bass player Murray Griffin, who originally formed to record and perform pieces from Adrian’s CD and book Comedy of Masculinity.

It took most of 20 years to finally persuade Adrian to risk an afternoon of playing together and just 15 minutes to persuade Murray to start a joint project.

Since forming the band, Adrian - who up until the Nineties had performed solo on the English folk scene and in several groups - has experienced a renaissance in performing his own songs and poems live.

He has written songs for artists such as June Tabor, Adele Anderson, of Fascinating Aida, and Maggie Holland as well as Spring Chickens and Eastern Angles Theatre Company.

Alongside this, Adrian has forged a career as a successful essayist in recent years.

Band mate Murray began playing the bass guitar aged 13.

Along the way he was classically trained as a trumpet player, only to eschew it for rock and roll.

Since becoming a musician he has played in pop, rock and reggae bands - but is probably best known for being a soul man.

Face Furniture aim to specialise in witty and thoughtful songs, performed with commitment and musicality, somewhere on the borders of skiffle, poetry and 21st century Music Hall.

With many decades of multiple musical experience between them, they bring a seasoned and satirical edge to every gig.

Listen to them at Jaywick’s Martello Tower on June 17 at 3pm.

Tickets are £5 or £4 with concessions from Martello Tower or call 01255 822783.
