PLANS for a popular winter ale festival are well under way.

Expect a wide selection of beers, ales and ciders at the Harwich and Parkeston Winter Ale Festival, which will this year mark the 350th anniversary of the construction of the town’s treadwheel crane.

The crane is believed to be one of only two of its kind left in Europe.

A festival spokesman said: “You will find a friendly welcome and pretty much all you need at our beer festival, but if you are a visitor and would like to explore a little more of the area you will find plenty of advice is on hand.

“A short hop on the train will take you into the Victorian seaside resort of Dovercourt, with its shops, cliffs and promenade and the Bottle Kiln and Kings Arms pubs.

“Or you could try Harwich Town, with the old seaport of Harwich and three great real ale pubs – the Hanover Inn, the Alma Inn and the New Bell Inn.”

The festival will take place at the Parkeston Railway Club, in Hamilton Street, between Wednesday, November 22 and Saturday, November 25.
