CLACTON MP Giles Watling has called on the Government to restrict the export of live animals for slaughter.
Mr Watling questioned the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs over whether it plans to restrict the export of animals.
He has now been told that the Government has launched a call for evidence before it takes steps to control exports.
In response to Mr Watling’s written question, George Eustice, minister of state at the department, said: “The Government has always been clear that it would prefer animals to be slaughtered close to the point of production.
“Our manifesto made it clear that we would take early steps to control the export of live farm animals for slaughter once we leave the EU.
“We have recently launched a call for evidence on the subject.”
