DRIVERS will have to slow down through parts of Colchester borough after it was announced 20mph limits are set to be introduced Essex County Council has said it is to lower the limit in parts of Wivenhoe and Parsons Heath.

Speeding has been a concern for residents, who said cars were allowed to go too fast near schools.

Broome Grove, Bowes Road, Amberley Close and Milford Close, in Wivenhoe, all currently with 30mph restrictions, will get the new limit.

Julie Young, county councillor for the Wivenhoe St Andrew division, said: “Road safety outside Wivenhoe schools has frequently been a concern for residents.

“I am delighted 20mph zones have been agreed to cover both Broomgrove and Millfields schools.

“I hope the road and pavement conditions will be improved, together with the road markings, alongside this work, to really ensure children travelling to these schools can be as safe as possible.”

Roach Vale, Orwell Close, Blackwater Avenue and Debden Road, in Parsons Heath, will also get the new limit, currently 30mph.

Speed surveys were carried out in the roads after residents complained and found Parsons Heath would benefit from the limit being lowered.

The new limits will be put to formal consultation with residents before approval.

Rodney Bass, county councillor for highways and transportation, said the move was supported by police.

He said: “I am pleased to approve these requests which will proceed to formal consultation prior to the making of a traffic regulation order.’’
