NEARLY 1,000 women marched through the streets of Colchester in trainers and tiaras to raise a huge sum of money for charity.

Swarms of walkers gathered to stretch their legs to the limit with the annual Midnight Walk, organised by St Helena Hospice, to boost its coffers.

Walkers set off from Weston Homes Community Stadium, at 10.30pm, on Saturday – earlier than the traditional midnight start time for the first time in the event’s seven-year history.

Participants powered their way around a 12km circuit, finishing in the early hours of Sunday.

Many of the women were sporting dazzling headwear to match this year’s trainers and tiaras theme.

The event raised an incredible total, topping £100,000.

The hospice says that cash could be used to fund 500 clinical nurse specialist visits to patients.

Fliss Strode, hospice events manager, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in our Midnight Walk.

“It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and to see lots of new and returning faces. It was an incredible night for everyone.”
