WITH the NHS struggling to make ends meet, the cause cannot expect to see much, if any, help from the Department of Health.

To make the task of raising £4.5million even more difficult, the hospital is hardly flavour of the past two years, let alone month.

But despite being in special measures since November 2013, we are always heartened to learn of the high regard the hospital is held in, by most of the people it serves.

Despite the problems it has faced, and continues to face, the reaction of residents can be summed up as defensive and supportive.

Every time we report that a health body has criticised the way the hospital is being run, we receive letters from patients, praising the care they have experienced.

If that was not the case, an ambitious cause like the Cancer Centre Campaign would simply be a non-starter.

Mr Wilson is no stranger to tough financial challenges, having turned around two ailing companies in his working life.

Raising millions of pounds, chiefly from the goodwill of local people, is a very different task.

But with such loyal support at hand, at least he stands a chance.
