HUNDREDS of people got into the Christmas spirit at Colchester’s Winter Wonderland during its opening weekend.

The new attraction officially opened on Friday and residents have been flocking to Castle Park to see what it has to offer.

The main feature is a skating rink made from real ice.

Organiser Ben Payne said: “People have been mesmerized. People are not expecting what we’ve got.

“I just want people to come and have a good time.

“It’s good for the town, it’s good for the shops and it’s a good thing for Colchester.”

Visitors can also have a go on fairground rides, including a helterskelter, and visit Father Christmas in his grotto.

There is also a vintage carousel, made in 1896, which was last in the park for the Queen’s coronation in 1953.

Mr Payne said: “We’ve carefully chosen the rides which will be at the heart of the fun. We really believe that alongside the ice skating, shopping market and food and drink there’s something for everyone.”

Speaking at the opening on Friday, deputy mayor Julie Young said: “I’m blown away by the experience.

“It is a great example of somebody coming up with an innovative idea and putting it into practice.

“It’s going to bring a huge amount of fun to the people of Colchester. The backdrop looks spectacular.”

During the opening there were displays from Dancing on Ice stars Vicky Ogden, Frankie Poultney and Mark Hanretty, as well as local skaters Jasmine Cressey and Alex, Edward and Elliott Appleby.

Entry to the attraction is free, but skating costs £11.50 for adults and £8.50 for children. The attraction is open until January 3, with more information at colchestericerink.co.uk.
