A MASSIVE 68 tonnes of extra food waste has been recycled in Tendring over the last four months.

Food waste recycling rates have shot up across the district after new caddy liners were sent out by the council.

The compostable liners mean residents do not have to dump the messy waste straight into the recycling caddy, keeping it clean.

Tendring Council environment boss Michael Talbot said: “We were confident that these convenient liners would make it easier for people to recycle food waste, keeping their cadies clean - thereby avoiding smells, without having to wash the caddy after every use - and this has boosted our figures,

“They have proved extremely popular and to be honest the success has exceeded our expectations.

“People have really taken to them and we are delighted.”

Residents received a free roll of liners earlier in the year, paid for by a Government grant to boost food recycling.

Now extra liners will be made available, costing £1.50 for 52, from June 6.

They will be available from the council’s offices in Thorpe Road, Weeley, Veolia Depot Office in Fowler Road, Clacton, and Brightlingsea Town Council in Victoria Place.
