AFTER their short summer break, Colchester Arts Centre Jazz Club returns with a double dose of smooth sounds courtesy of critically acclaimed duo Paul Towndrow and Steve Hamilton.

Alto saxophonist Paul and pianist Steve will be performing material from their highly acclaimed debut CD, We Shine The Sun, which is made-up of seven original compositions and six ‘covers’, drawing from a mixed bag of sources and composers, such as John Scofield, Bela Bartok, and Polish film composer Bronislaw Kaper.

Preceding the main event will be Paul and Steve's 'Welcome To Jazz’, a light-hearted, 30-minute performance, in which the pair explore the history of jazz, aiming to provide a unique insight into the inner workings of the music.

Best known as one quarter of the in-demand four-piece horn section Brass Jaw and a member of Scotland’s flagship jazz orchestra, the SNJO, Paul Towndrow has been performing professionally since the age of 15. His live credentials include appearances with jazz greats such as Branford Marsalis and Randy Brecker, as well as Motown stars such as Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Ben E. King and the Average White Band.

Steve on the other hand is one of Europe’s most creative and experienced contemporary pianists, performing a multitude of music - from the improvised, to pop, film and session work.

Over the years, Steve has performed and recorded with such notable musicians as Ray Charles and Van Morrison, and is currently a member of drummer Billy Cobham’s band, who he joins for a week’s residency at Ronnie Scott’s following his gig at the Colchester Jazz Club.

The duo will be playing the Colchester Jazz Club at the Colchester Arts Centre this Sunday, September 4.

Doors open at 7pm with the performance starting at 7.30pm while tickets are priced £12 and £10 for concessions, available from the box office on 01206 500900 or on-line at www.colchesterartscentre.com
