TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular footballer who died suddenly.

Ground worker Lee Pennycuick, who played for Brightlingsea Regent’s Sunday side, died in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Players paid tribute to the former Alderman Blaxill student, who lived in Colchester, by observing a minute of silence and wore black armbands during their weekend games.

In a statement released by the club, it states: “Everyone involved in the club is deeply saddened by the recent news.

“Lee loved his football making the number three shirt his own while playing for our Sunday men’s team.

He was extremely well liked and a popular member of Brightlingsea Regent even having the club’s crest tattooed on his leg.

“Lee will be deeply missed by so many but never forgotten by everyone.”

Other tributes, including from Colchester United player Sammie Szmodics, have been paid on social media.

Alongside a prayer symbol, the U’s star tweeted: “RIP BRO.”

Mr Pennycuick’s dad, John, who livs in Edinburgh, posted on his social media account: “Our youngest son Lee Paris Pennycuick said: ‘Only Jesus can judge him coz he’s the only one with a better beard’.

Well son I hope your being judged now. RIP Lee always in our hearts.”

Friends have also paid their tributes. Gemma Gardiner posted: “One of the funniest people I ever met. Lee was an absolute legend with a wicked sense of humour.

“Colchester has lost an absolute legend. May you rest in peace now Lee.”

Samantha Stevens wrote: “[He] would light up a room as soon as he walked in!”

Lynn Booth added: “Life and soul of the party. RIP Lee thinking of John, Mary and rest of the family.”

Another pal posted: “I think the whole of Colchester is in mourning today.”

Mr Pennycuick’s best friend Nathaniel Powell wore the number three shirt in the 31-year-old’s honour during yesterday’s 7-2 win in which he scored one goal.

Coach James Webster confirmed Mr Pennycuick’s shirt will be retired.
