A police officer was assaulted as he arrested a man on suspicion of drink-driving.

The attack followed a collision on the Clacton-bound carriageway of the A133 at Weeley.

The officer suffered a knee injury after trying to stop the man from leaving the scene of a road collision.

The collision happened shortly before 4.20pm on Saturday, December 3.

Police were contacted with reports that a white Ford Transit flatbed truck was being driven by a possible drunk driver.

The vehicle was then in collision with the verge and central barrier before being colliding with a maroon Mercedes Sprinter van.

The Ford Transit was left at the scene and the driver made off on foot but was stopped by officers in Arnold Road, Weeley. An officer was assaulted as he arrested the man.

The driver and passenger of the Sprinter van were not injured and were able to carry on with their journey. The officer required medical treatment and is now recovering.

A 37-year-old man of no fixed address is currently being questioned by officers on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and driving under the influence of alcohol.
