BIN lorries in Colchester could soon be fitted with high definition cameras to spot potential potholes.
A trial is being carried out in another part of Essex, by the Department for Transport, to see whether the devices can help monitor roads and pick up problems before road surfaces break up completely.
A spokesman for the department claimed it could "revolutionise the way potholes are identified and managed".
The trial has been launched in Thurrock and York.
If successful it could be expanded across the county.
